Alexis double gives Chile victory in England

Chile ended England's ten-game unbeaten run stretching back to last November, triumphing at Wembley against their fellow 2014 FIFA World Cup contenders courtesy of two goals from Alexis Sánchez.

The FC Barcelona winger's seventh-minute opener and deft added-time effort condemned the home side to their first defeat since they lost 4-2 to a Zlatan Ibrahimović-inspired Sweden 12 months ago. The result comes 15 years after a Marcelo Salas double earned the South American nation an identical result in north London.  

Visiting goalkeeper Claudio Bravo had already been extended by a header from centre-back Phil Jones before Alexis stole in front of full-back Leigton Baines to nod in Eugenio Mena's left-wing cross.

Jean Beausejour, who plays in England for UEFA Europa League contenders Wigan Athletic FC, helped set up the breakthrough by laying off possession to Mena and he was next to threaten, eliciting a diving save out of Fraser Forster in the hosts' goal.

At the other end, Bravo tipped over a dipping free-kick from stand-in captain Frank Lampard – who before the game received a commemorative golden cap for reaching 100 international appearances – and Forster's fellow debutant Adam Lallana dragged a shot wide when well-placed.

England, for whom Lallana's Southampton FC team-mate Jay Rodriguez also featured for the first time, pressed for an equaliser in a second half short of chances but not lacking in physical edge. However, they were caught out in added time when Gary Cahill ceded possession on the halfway line and Alexis was played through on goal to finish with aplomb.
