Having recently wrapped up a 15th league and cup double, it was perhaps unsurprising that Olympiacos FC dominated the end of season awards in Greece, with forward Kevin Mirallas claiming the player of the year award.
Mirallas finished as the league's top scorer with 20 goals from 25 appearances and was voted Greek Super League player of the season for 2011/12 by the Greek public and a panel of experts. Olympiacos coach Ernesto Valverde was also recognised in Athens on Thursday night, picking up the coach of the season award in his final campaign in charge of the Erythrolefki (Red and Whites).
A superb lob by Olympiacos midfielder Giannis Fetfatzidis against Atromitos FC on the final day of the campaign won the goal of the season award, while 18-year-old Panathinaikos FC goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino scooped the save of the season prize for his spectacular stop against Olympiacos in November. The young player of the year award went to Xanthi FC's Greek Under-21 international Panagiotis Vlachodimos.
There was also a special award presented to the Greece national team for reaching the UEFA EURO 2012 final tournament in Poland and Ukraine. Coach Fernando Santos was presented the honour by former Portuguese international Rui Costa, who was an honorary guest at the ceremony.
