Olympiacos FC celebrated their 25th Greek Cup triumph thanks a 2-1 extra-time win against Atromitos FC at the Olympic Stadium.
The victory also set the seal on a 15th domestic double for the Greek champions, in what was Ernesto Valverde's final game in charge. They took the initiative from the start and were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead after Giannis Maniatis was felled in the area – but José Holebas fired wide from the penalty spot. Four minutes later, Olympiacos broke the deadlock when Algerian striker Rafik Djebbour combined with fellow countryman Djamel Abdoun and found the net with an accomplished finish.
Atromitos, who were appearing in their second successive Greek Cup final, responded well after the break and Matias Iglesias's equaliser on 74 minutes sent the game into extra time. Despite the setback, Olympiacos regained control of the match, but, just as penalties loomed, Fuster settled matters with a powerful header.
After the final whistle, Valverde received the adulation of the Olympaicos supporters. "It was a very emotional moment for me," he said. "It's very difficult to express my feelings right now. I always hoped that the fans would appreciate my work; however, this was an amazing experience."
Fuster was also ecstatic after scoring the winner in extra time. "I am very happy with our victory and especially proud to have scored such an important goal," said the Spanish midfielder. "I feel great as it's my second season in Greece and I have won the league twice. I was anxious to win the Greek Cup as well."
