The cream is already rising to the top of the Bundesliga, as last season's top three of FC Bayern München, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer 04 Leverkusen were joined by 1. FSV Mainz 05 in extending their 100% records.
The match of the day was in Leverkusen. Two strikes in three minutes early in the second half extinguished the two-goal lead the hosts had established through Stefan Kiessling and Sidney Sam, but Sami Hyypia's side showed their resolve and registered twice more to beat VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-2.
Champions Bayern also found the going tough against visitors 1. FC Nürnberg. David Alaba's first-half penalty was saved and it took until the 69th minute for Franck Ribéry to break the deadlock with a rare header. Arjen Robben completed the scoring in style, beating three men before slipping the ball between the goalkeeper's legs.
Mainz's dream start goes on, too. Thomas Tuchel's side – who finished 13th last term – scored two second-half goals to sink VfL Wolfsburg, who had new signing Luiz Gustavo sent off. On Friday, Robert Lewandowski tapped in the only goal, his second in three games, as Dortmund overcame SV Werder Bremen.
