Schweinsteiger honoured as Germany's best

Bastian Schweinsteiger was "surprised" to receive the German footballer of the year award for 2013, with his former FC Bayern München boss Jupp Heynckes picking up the coaches' prize.

FC Bayern München's Bastian Schweinsteiger has been named German footballer of the year for 2013.

The midfielder succeeded Marco Reus, who finished 11th this time around, with 92 of the 527 votes cast in the annual ballot of sports journalists. Schweinsteiger's team-mates Franck Ribéry (87 votes) and Thomas Müller (85) came second and third respectively.

"I am a bit surprised because there were times last season when my performances were criticised quite heavily in the media," said the 28-year-old Schweinsteiger, who in 2012/13 helped the Bavarian side to an unprecedented treble of Bundesliga, German Cup and UEFA Champions League triumphs.

In total, 14 of the top 15 players in the vote featured in the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley – nine from Bayern and five from Borussia Dortmund. Bayer 04 Leverkusen's Stefan Kiessling, the 25-goal top scorer in the German top flight, was the exception.

Former Bayern trainer Jupp Heynckes was voted best coach, winning by a huge margin after receiving 383 votes. "It's a great honour and a perfect way to conclude what happened last season," said the 68-year-old, now enjoying retirement. "It's as if a lot of my dreams have suddenly become reality." SC Freiburg's Christian Streich was second, with Dortmund boss Jürgen Klopp third.

Martina Müller, a UEFA Women's Champions League victor with VfL Wolfsburg, received the women's footballer of the year award.
