Dortmund beat Bayern to lift German Super Cup

Josep Guardiola's FC Bayern München tenure began with a defeat as the UEFA Champions League holders suffered a 4-2 German Super Cup loss against Borussia Dortmund in a repeat of May's Wembley final.

Marco Reus capitalised on a mistake by Bayern goalkeeper Tom Starke to open the scoring in the sixth minute, but the Bundesliga champions were level nine minutes into the second half thanks to an Arjen Robben header. Dortmund responded almost immediately with two goals in the space of as many minutes and, although Robben pulled one back for Bayern, Reus put the result beyond doubt four minutes from time.

Seeking a measure of revenge from their UEFA Champions League final defeat in May, Dortmund made the perfect start when Stark, deputising for the injured Manuel Neuer, failed to gather after some confusion involving Van Buyten and Reus headed in from close range. Xherdan Shaqiri and Thomas Müller then came close to an equaliser but Roman Weidenfeller was at his best to repel their efforts before Robert Lewandowski was denied by a fine Starke save at the other end.

The final meaningful chance of the first half fell to Mario Mandžukić but he failed to connect with David Alaba's inviting cross. However, in the 54th minute, Bayern were level when Philipp Lahm's centre was met by the head of Robben, who made no mistake at the far post. The game then came to life and Dortmund responded with two goals in two minutes. First, Van Buyten deflected a Gündoğan cross into his own net before the 22-year-old brilliantly curled the ball past Starke from the edge of the area.

Lahm combined with Robben again just seven minutes later to reduce the deficit and Bayern subsequently piled on the pressure with Mandžukić's bicycle kick flying narrowly wide before Müller hit the bar after Thiago Alcántara's superb pass. Dortmund had the final say, though, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang raced on to Lewandowski through ball and squared for Reus to tap in and seal the win.

"A defeat always hurts, we definitely wanted to win this title," said Robben after the game, while Guardiola added: "We played well, but were up against a great team. We had a few chances, but after a month of pre-season, we can be satisfied with this performance."

For Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp it was important that his side improve defensively and showed that they can beat their Bundesliga rivals. "For us it was about improving our defensive behaviour as a team," he said. "We managed to do that quite well against the best team in the world. Bayern are very strong in possession, but we coped with that well. Today was proof that we can beat Bayern when it all comes together for us."
