Club Atlético de Madrid have been crowned Copa del Rey winners for the tenth time, Diego Simeone's men defeating Real Madrid CF 2-1 after 120 minutes of a game which finished with both sides down to ten men.
Ordered off before the end of the 248th encounter between these teams, Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring at the Santiago Bernabéu on 14 minutes. Los Colchoneros – who had Gabi dismissed in the closing stages – responded through Diego Costa's angled shot. In the first period of extra time, Miranda leapt ahead of goalkeeper Diego López to nod in the winner.
"It was an incredible game," said Simeone, who has guided Atlético to UEFA Europa League glory, the UEFA Super Cup and a third-place Liga finish in the last 12 months. "We had that slice of luck you need in order to be champions. We also had our chances. What these players have done in the past year and a half is incredible. I have no words."
Looking to extend a 25-match unbeaten run against their city rivals that stretched back 14 years, Madrid forged ahead when Ronaldo rose from a central position to head Luka Modrić's corner away from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Atlético rallied and were on level terms in the 34th minute, Falcao displaying strength and skill to escape his markers before feeding Diego Costa, whose low drive narrowly evaded Diego López's dive. José Mourinho's side continued to display their attacking threat and went close to regaining the lead when Mesut Özil’s shot into the ground from distance hit the upright.
The chances flowed after the restart, Felipe Luis finding the side netting from the left before Karim Benzema struck Ronaldo's centre against a post and Özil's subsequent follow-up attempt was cleared off the line by Juanfran.
The woodwork came to the rescue of the Rojiblancos once again in the 68th minute, with Ronaldo this time hitting the base of a post with a clever free-kick.
Mourinho was then ordered off as passions continued to soar, while the fervour of the Atlético fans bubbled over when Miranda connected with Koke's corner in extra time. Determined not to see his team denied, Courtois twice came to the rescue to save smartly from Gonzalo Higuaín and, remarkably, Özil before Ronaldo and Gabi saw red in quick succession.
"This win is for all of those fans who were waiting 14 years for us to beat Real Madrid," said Gabi. "The team worked really hard ahead of this match, we worked to be here now standing on front of our fans [in celebration]."
