FC Porto 0-0 CD Once Caldas (aet; Porto win 8-7 on penalties)
Pedro Emanuel struck the winning kick, the 18th of a rollercoaster penalty shoot-out, to ensure FC Porto lifted the 2004 European/South American Cup after a goalless draw with CD Once Caldas in Yokohama. Porto hit the woodwork three times and had two goals disallowed before Pedro Emanuel completed a remarkable victory his side's attacking display fully merited. By then Diego had been dismissed for goading the flamboyant Caldas goalkeeper Juan Carlos Henao after scoring the first kick of the shoot-out.
Porto chances
Porto looked to make an early impression in the 43rd and final staging of the competition. On seven minutes Derlei nodded down for Benni McCarthy to score at the far post, but the South African striker's celebrations were cut short by the offside flag. Porto, who had defeated AS Monaco FC 3-0 to win the UEFA Champions League the previous May, were in command but luck was against them. A Diego free-kick was flicked on to the far post by Viáfara, Derlei followed in but could only scramble the ball up on to the crossbar and McCarthy shot over from close range. The finest move of the match came from Caldas, however, the outstanding Fabbro threading a pass inside for Viáfara, whose angled shot from the right whistled wide.
Tough battle
The second half brought more one-way traffic and Porto thought they had taken the lead when McCarthy crashed the ball past Henao only for play to be pulled back for offside. McCarthy's hard luck continued when his venomous strike rattled the crossbar. Ricardo Costa's thunderous downward header could have sealed victory, but Henao's wonderful stop forced extra time. Porto's Vítor Baía was floored reaching for a bouncing ball and he left the field for Nuno, but the replacement goalkeeper was not called into action until the dramatic shoot-out, when he helped earn the European champions their reward. "Everyone fought hard for this title so it's very gratifying," Maniche said. "It's a final so we expected a tough battle but we got what we deserved."
