The former Rangers FC and Scotland captain Eric Caldow has passed away at the age of 84.
Full-back Caldow made 407 appearances during his 13 years at Rangers, winning five league titles, two Scottish FA Cups and three Scottish League Cups. He captained the Rangers side that reached the European Cup Winners' Cup final in 1961.
He also won 40 caps for Scotland and captained the national side 14 times, making three appearances in the Scottish team at the 1958 FIFA World Cup finals in Sweden. His international career was curtailed by a broken leg suffered in Scotland's famous 2-1 win over England at Wembley in 1963.
Caldow was inducted into the Scottish Football Association (SFA) Hall of Fame in 2007. “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Eric’s passing,” said the association’s president Alan McRae. “Eric was one of the finest full-backs to grace Scottish football.”
Rangers also paid tribute to their former captain. "Eric truly was a player who could easily be described as heroic,” said chairman David King, “and came to epitomise the standards, characteristics and values associated with this club."
