Former Latvian international Kaspars Gorkšs has been elected as the new president of the Latvian Football Federation (LFF).
Gorkšs, who will serve a two-year term after his election at the LFF general assembly in Riga, succeeds Guntis Indriksons, who has stepped down after being at the helm of Latvian football since 1996 – a period during which Latvia qualified for the UEFA EURO 2004 finals in Portugal. Indriksons has been named LFF honorary president.
Gorkšs retired from professional football last winter. He won 89 caps for Latvia between 2005 and 2017, and captained his country for several years. In a distinguished career as a defender, he played for clubs in Latvia, England, Czech Republic, Greece and Sweden.
"This is an immense honour and responsibility for me," the 36-year-old told delegates at the assembly after his election. "You have voiced your support not only for me, but also for the whole of Latvian football."
Gorkšs pledged to further develop the country’s football infrastructures. “I am committed to starting the process and fulfilling my programme,” he said.
“I used to fight until the very end on the football pitch, and I will have the same attitude towards my new role and all of the federation’s demanding tasks."
