Article body
• The Netherlands won all three of their Group A games, beating Norway (1-0), Denmark (1-0) and Belgium (2-1).
• Sweden opened Group B by holding Germany 0-0 and then crucially beat Russia 2-0. That meant they could afford a 3-2 loss to Italy and still finish second.
• Lotta Schelin's two goals so far have made her the all-time leading UEFA Women's EURO group scorer on six.
Quarter-final pedigree
• The Netherlands have reached this stage three times. In 1989, over two legs, they went down 5-1 to Norway and two years later they lost 1-0 on aggregate to an extra-time Denmark goal in Denekamp. On their finals debut in 2009 they beat France 5-4 on penalties following a 0-0 draw; Shanice van de Sanden, Sherida Spitse, Angela Christ were all unused substitutes that day.
• Italy's eliminination means Sweden are now the only nation to have reached the last eight in all 12 editions of this competition. Their only quarter-final losses were in 1991 (on away goals to Italy after 1-1 and 0-0 draws), 1993 (3-2 on aggregate to Denmark) and 2009 (3-1 to Norway). In 2013, as hosts, they beat Iceland 4-0.
• Sweden are aiming to reach a ninth semi-final, which before this tournament was a record shared by Germany and Norway.
Previous meetings
• These teams last met competitively in March 2016 in the Olympic qualifiers in Rotterdam. A 1-1 draw took Sweden to Brazil (where they won silver) at the Netherlands' expense. Vivianne Miedema's early goal for Roger Reijners' side was cancelled out just before half-time by Olivia Schough.
