A banker, financier and economic expert with a doctorate from Budapest University of Economic Sciences, Sándor Csányi worked for the Hungarian finance ministry before moving into banking, becoming chairman-CEO of Hungary's biggest commercial bank in 1992. Csányi – through his holding company – has become one of the biggest investors in the agriculture and food industry in Central and Eastern Europe.
Well known in Hungary for his entrepreneurial skills, he was elected as president of the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) in July 2010, and brought experts from other sectors, such as science and finance, on to the association's management board.
He was elected as a member of the FIFA Council at UEFA's Helsinki Congress in April 2017, and was elected as a FIFA vice-president at the Bratislava Congress in February 2018. He was confirmed in the latter position for the 2019-23 period at the Rome Congress in February 2019. Csányi was also appointed as a UEFA vice-president in February 2019.
