Slovakia’s football history and the country’s players, coaches and officials who have left their mark on the game, both domestically and on the international stage, is brought alive by the new Slovak football Hall of Fame in the capital Bratislava.
The Hall of Fame, located on a temporary basis in the same building as the Slovak Football Association’s (SFZ) headquarters, was unveiled at a ceremony attended by SFZ president Ján Kováčik, renowned Slovak coach Jozef Vengloš and one of the most famous Slovak footballers of all time, Jozef Adamec.
The premises, currently comprising two floors, contain a considerable number of artefacts, such as shirts, football boots, balls and photos, that reflect Slovakia’s distinguished contribution to the game over the years.
The personalities featured in the Hall of Fame include Vengloš and Adamec; three members of the Czechoslovakia team that reached the 1962 FIFA World Cup final – Viliam Schrojf, Ján Popluhár and Adolf Scherer; and four members of Czechoslovakia's team that won the European title in 1976 – Jozef Čapkovič, Karol Dobiaš, Anton Ondruš and Ján Pivarník.
Members of the Hall of Fame are proposed by a committee comprising representatives of the SFZ executive committee and honorary council, and are each honoured by a special trophy created by eminent Slovak sculptor Jozef Hobor.
The Hall of Fame is set to find a permanent home when the construction of Slovakia’s new national stadium is completed.
