The winners of the UEFA EURO 2016 Respect Environment Awards have been revealed.
These prizes salute the environmental measures implemented by the host cities and stadiums during the tournament in France, as well as by the internal UEFA and EURO 2016 SAS project teams, and recognise high standards achieved in innovation, impact, legacy and stakeholder engagement.
The jury comprised representatives from the French Football Federation (FFF), French Professional Football League (LFP), Fondaction du Football, French ministry of sport, AISTS graduate school, Paris 2024 Summer Olympics bidding committee, Roland-Garros tennis tournament and, of course, UEFA.
The three outstanding candidates in each category have been selected as winners and will receive a trophy:
UEFA and EURO 2016 SAS made great efforts to minimise the environmental impact of their activities.
The strategy focused on four priorities: waste management, public transport and mobility, energy and water optimisation, and sourcing of products and services. As a result, UEFA EURO 2016 operations were certified as a sustainable event management system (ISO 20121).
For the first time, cities and stadiums were invited to showcase their best practice through an awards competition, in order to ensure a positive legacy and a cascade effect on future events. The process was successful, with 28 applications made for the awards.
"We were impressed by the number and quality of applications we received," said Jacques Lambert, EURO 2016 SAS president.
"I thank all the contestants, and warmly congratulate all the winners. Our joint effort is an important milestone which will pave the way for future events."
Special prizes have also been given in addition to the set categories. These include an award to Club des Sites for its work in waste management; the city of Lille for its training and sustainability integration; and Marseille's stadium for its operational engagement with regard to infrastructures.
