Gomes re-elected in Portugal

Fernando Gomes has been re-elected for a second term as president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).

Gomes, a member of the UEFA Executive Committee, singled out transparency as the main objective of this new term. "Simplicity is football's main asset,” he said, “and things have to be as simple off the field of play as they are on it. Transparency is something we will put upon ourselves during the four years of this term. Along with my team, I want to leave a legacy as far as this is concerned.

"The FPF must be a model organisation. Socially responsible, innovative and integrative, finding the balance between professional football and the grassroots, and listening to every agent of the game in order to improve the decision processes."

Pledging to fight negative phenomena such as doping and match-fixing, Gomes promised to "focus attention on the essentials – and in football, the players are the essential."

He said: "We want to get more women, men, girls and boys playing. We want to promote our national teams, and ensure that we have competitions at every age level, promoting the development of the athletes."

The FPF president also expressed the hope that Portugal would perform well at the upcoming UEFA EURO 2016 tournament.
