The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has joined West Bromwich Albion in paying tribute to former Republic of Ireland international Davy Walsh, who has passed away at the age of 92.
Waterford native Walsh was capped 20 times by the Republic of Ireland, having made his debut away to Portugal in 1946, and played for his country for the last time, against France, in 1953. He also played 11 times for Northern Ireland (1946-1950) as players were able to represent both nations at that time.
FAI chief executive John Delaney said: "It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of Davy Walsh. A terrific player for Ireland, as well as Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion, he will be dearly missed." West Brom's official website called Walsh "one of the great post-war pioneers who helped reconstruct the football club and, ultimately, laid the foundations for what became the 'Team of the Century'".
