AS Trenčín have won the Slovak Cup for the first time since independence after beating FK Senica 3-2 on penalties.
Trenčín went into the game in Poprad five points clear in the league with six games remaining, meaning the cup final represented the first part of a potential double. The leaders are halfway towards that achievement now after holding their nerve in the shoot-out when the contest finished 2-2 after extra time.
Senica took an early lead when Trenčín's right back Peter Čögley scored an own goal but the match went to extra time thanks to Ibrahim Rabiu's close-range finish on 36 minutes. Gino van Kessel gave Trenčín the lead with ten minutes to go in extra time but the league's 15-goal top scorer Jan Kalabiška replied from Filip Hlohovský's corner four minutes later to force penalties.
