FC Lokomotiv Moskva came from behind to beat FC Kuban Krasnodar 3-1 after extra time in Astrakhan and clinch their sixth Russian Cup.

Kuban, aiming for their first major trophy in their maiden final, took the lead midway through the first half when Vladislav Ignatyev capitalised on a slip by Vitali Denisov. But Lokomotiv, currently led by interim coach Igor Cherevchenko, fought back and Baye Oumar Niasse's goal 17 minutes from time forced extra time.

In a cautious additional half-hour, Lokomotiv edged in front at the end of the first period when Mbark Boussoufa headed in Alan Kasaev's cross and Aleksei Miranchuk rounded things off with a solo goal. Lokomotiv are now just one away from PFC CSKA Moskva's record total of seven Russian Cups and are looking forward to a UEFA Europa League group stage place in 2015/16.

"This was my first final as a coach so there was a lot of stress," said Cherevchenko. "I want to thank the lads, who gathered themselves together at the break and fought back. Thank God it didn't go to penalties. I dedicate this victory to my dad, who passed away in March 2014. He made me a footballer, a coach, a person."

Midfielder Miranchuk said: "I don't know how to describe my emotions. It's my biggest victory to date, but the main one is still to come – we have a league to win." Roman Pavlyuchenko added: "This was our last chance to catch a train to Europe and prove we have a real team. We have worked previously with Kuban coach Leonid Kuchuk, so we knew how our opponents would play. Today we were fresher and luckier."
