Triesenberg set a new mark in Liechtenstein

Every club in Liechtenstein has now made it to the final of the country's biggest competition – at least once – after FC Triesenberg battled through the semi-finals to book a date with 42-time winners FC Vaduz.

Only seven competitive clubs are registered with the Liechtenstein Football Association (LFV), with the youngest of them – Triesenberg, founded in 1972 – having waited 43 years to become the seventh finalists in the tiny nation's only major domestic competition. However, they have their work cut out if they are to become the sixth different side to win the Liechtenstein Cup; Vaduz, the nation's only professional team, have won 18 of the last 20 editions, and play in a league six levels up from their rivals.

The Grand Duchy of Liechtenstein has a population of under 40,000, with local clubs playing in the league system of neighbouring Switzerland. Vaduz have thrived in recent years, and won promotion to the Swiss top division for the third time last season. However, like all of the other Liechtenstein clubs, they return home to compete in the Liechtenstein Cup, with their reserve and Under-23 sides also able to take part; indeed it was Vaduz's U23s that Triesenberg beat to reach this season's final.
