The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has paid tribute to former president Charles Cahill, who has passed away in Dublin at the age of 89.

The veteran administrator was involved in Irish football as far back as the 1940s when he was a player with amateur team Transport FC, and later on the administrative side of the game. Cahill was honoured to serve as FAI president from 1978 to 1980, after which he became honorary life president.

"Charlie was a wonderful, hard-working football man and his presidency of the association was richly deserved," current FAI president Tony Fitzgerald said.

FAI chief executive John Delaney added: "He was an administration legend. He will be missed by everyone in the game." The FAI will mark the passing of Cahill at the UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier at home to Poland on 29 March.
