Breathtaking Bundesliga delivers weekend special

A haul of 33 goals in seven Bundesliga matches made for a breathtaking spectacle on matchday 21.

FC Bayern München led the way, powering eight past Hamburger SV without reply in their biggest league triumph since March 1984. What a difference 24 hours makes – on Friday had Josep Guardiola bemoaned: "If we carry on playing like this then we'll have problems defending the championship and no chance of winning the Champions League."

His side's response was emphatic, owing much to the brilliance of free-flowing winger Arjen Robben. "Robben was worth the entry fee alone. When he was subbed, I thought about applauding – and then I did. You have to pay him that compliment," admitted HSV chairman Dietmar Beiersdorfer.

"There are days in life that you'd like to forget. You don't have to say much more after an 8-0 defeat. We have to apologise to the fans," added HSV coach Joe Zinnbauer, whose opposite number had been somewhat appeased. "We played well. I'm happy. The atmosphere around the team is better than it was before," said Guardiola.

If the Spaniard was quietly satisfied, VFL Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost exuded confidence after plundering four goals in a remarkable 5-4 defeat of Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Leading 3-0 at half-time, the Wolves were sitting pretty until Leverkusen pulled it back to 4-4 courtesy of a Son Heung-Min hat-trick. More drama was to come, though, as Dost snatched a 94th-minute winner. 

"It was a crazy game," he beamed. "We were impressive in the first half but catastrophic in the second – we forgot how to play football." Injuries meant the Dutchman had struggled to make an impact in Germany following his switch from sc Heerenveen in summer 2012, but the goals are now flowing, with eight in his last five outings. "We want a Champions League place and that's what we'll get," Dost insisted. Second-placed Wolfsburg are now ten points clear of FC Augsburg in fifth.

A rejuvenated Borussia Dortmund made the headlines on Friday, Marco Reus turning on the style in a 4-2 win against 1. FSV Mainz 05. Elsewhere, SV Werder Bremen – once threatened by relegation – recorded their fifth straight success, edging Augsburg 3-2 to move within sight of a UEFA Europa League berth. Thomas Schaaf marked his 500th Bundesliga game as a coach by steering Eintracht Frankfurt to a 1-0 victory over FC Schalke 04.

So all in all, the perfect appetiser ahead of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League knockout stages. Europe, look out – Robben, Dost and Co are coming …
