Just Fontaine's 1958 record of 13 goals in a FIFA World Cup may never be broken but, as the former France forward points out, not many other high-water marks are safe in an era of striking riches.
"Up front, there's no doubt about it," says the 81-year-old as he surveys his Team of the Year 2014. There is also a revolutionary goalkeeper, a midfielder not afraid of dirty work, a perfect athlete, and nine players from either Real Madrid CF or FC Bayern München; in fact, a couple have represented both in the past 12 months.

Vote for your Team of the Year 2014
Manuel Neuer: Above all, Neuer is a great libero. He's quick and strong. I have loved his performances this year, he has revolutionised his position!
David Alaba: Alaba plays at Bayern and he is well integrated into their defensive machine. He is physical and has great potential.
Sergio Ramos: He is pretty brutal and does not shirk from a battle. He is also a great athlete who always ensures good delivery of the ball. A safe bet.
Vincent Kompany: Since he arrived in England, Kompany has established himself among the best centre-backs in the world. He's an all-round talent.
Philipp Lahm: I chose Alaba and Lahm without hesitation. I have always preferred Lahm on the wing. He supplies excellent crosses and is a constant threat. He is a good leader as well.
Arjen Robben: I love his devastating dribbling, especially when he bursts from the right and onto his left foot. He has had a great year, with lots of goals. He was among the best during the World Cup.
Xabi Alonso: Bayern took a punt on him and he has been born again. He can do the dirty work and his distribution is excellent.
Toni Kroos: Kroos was initially an attacking midfielder, but he can play wider and it works well. He can score, create chances and always seems well placed. He feels the game.
Luka Modrić: His work-rate is remarkable and much of Real Madrid's European triumph was down to him. He plays with remarkable accuracy.
Cristiano Ronaldo: Ronaldo and Messi are the best two strikers in the world. Every season he breaks a new record. In the Liga, he is irresistible. A perfect athlete and increasingly efficient.
Lionel Messi: Like Ronaldo, he keeps breaking new ground. He has just become the all-time top scorer in the Liga and has blown away Raúl's UEFA Champions League record. Right now, this is the best pair of forwards.
