Schmeichel: My team of 2014

Led by the best goalkeeper he has seen in a "very, very long time" and "the best player in the world, end of story", Peter Schmeichel has assembled a formidable-looking side for his Team of the Year 2014.

In a lineup bookended by Manuel Neuer and Cristiano Ronaldo, the EURO '92 winning keeper enlists five world champions, two UEFA Champions League winners and three of Manchester City FC's Premier League title holders.

Manuel Neuer: Absolutely no doubt in my mind who I am going to pick here; Neuer, of course. World champion, German champion and the year before a UEFA Champions League winner as well. For me, he is the best goalkeeper in the world and the best goalkeeper I have seen for a very, very long time.

Pablo Zabaleta: I think he has had an unbelievable season with his club and was instrumental in them becoming champions. I also think he had a good FIFA World Cup.

Vincent Kompany: At centre-half I will go for another Manchester City player. Again, he had a fantastic season for his club and a very good World Cup, and he is an incredible leader. In any team he would be an absolute star.

Mats Hummels: Next to Kompany I have gone for another world champion. The German international is a player I wish would come to Manchester United. He was instrumental in Germany's World Cup win; he scored important goals but his defending has been fantastic.

Philipp Lahm: At left-back I wanted this player in my team, he is remarkable. During the World Cup he was playing defensive midfield, but to get him in my team I've put him as left-back. He gives his manager options to put him wherever. He is an unbelievable player, a true leader, and I think he guided Germany to the World Cup.

Yaya Touré: Starting with central midfield, Touré is for me perhaps the best defensive midfielder in the world. I think he was key to Manchester City's success in winning the Premier League and I have always been a great admirer. He has had another fantastic season.

Toni Kroos: Next to Touré, yet another world champion. He was unbelievable in the World Cup, but for a couple of years now he has been unbelievable. I think perhaps the most underrated superstar in the world.

Arjen Robben: I have gone for Robben on the right. His World Cup was fantastic – without him I don't think the Netherlands would have had such a great World Cup. Some of the goals he scored came from great individual skill. So he is on my right.

Ángel Di María: On the other side is Di María. He is probably the most improved player over the last 18 months. He now plays for my club Manchester United and has made a fantastic impact right from the beginning of the season.

Thomas Müller: His World Cup was fantastic. To score that many goals in a World Cup at that age shows he has some very special talent. For many people he is an awkward player, but I like the awkwardness, because that is what gives him the goals he scores.

Cristiano Ronaldo: The last player in my team is Cristiano Ronaldo. I think he is the best player in the world. End of story. I am not going to say anything more about him.

Peter Schmeichel was talking to Elvir Islamović.
