PEC Zwolle lifted the Dutch Super Cup for the first time in their history after defeating AFC Ajax 1-0 in a repeat of last season's cup final.

In the traditional season opener, league champions Ajax were keen to gain revenge for the surprise Dutch Cup final defeat in April, when Zwolle won 5-1 to earn their first piece of major silverware. Frank de Boer's side started the stronger, with new signing striker Nick Viergever hitting the post early on only to sustain an injury in attempting to put away the rebound. At the other end Mustafa Saymak's chip dropped just over the bar.

It was Zwolle who went ahead ten minutes after the restart when Kamohelo Mokotjo crossed for Stefan Nijland to score. Ajax pushed for the equaliser and Zwolle keeper Diederik Boer showed his worth to keep out a header from Niklas Moisander and Davy Klaassen's effort. The cup winners held on to defeat Ajax for the first time ever in Amsterdam and claim the Johan Cruijff Schaal.

"I think it was deserved," said victorious coach Ron Jans. "We have a team in which everyone knows exactly what to do. In the 104 years of existence of the club, to win the cup and the Johan Cruijff Schaal in a such a short period is fantastic."
