Fenerbahçe SK coach İsmail Kartal said his side had done all he asked of them after beginning his tenure with a trophy following victory over Galatasaray AŞ in the Turkish Super Cup.
Champions Fenerbahçe dominated proceedings in Manisa but with neither side able to break the deadlock the game went to penalties. After Olcan Adın and Dirk Kuyt found the net there were five successive misses but substitute Michal Kadlec's successful conversion sealed a 3-2 victory.
It meant a first trophy for Kartal after he stepped up from an assistant role to replace Ersun Yanal. "My players did exactly what I told them for much of the game," he said. "We created lots of opportunities and gave Galatasaray few of their own. Even if we had lost I couldn't have complained. Doing the right things on the pitch was what mattered."
Kartal had the benefit of a well-established squad – not so opposite number Cesare Prandelli as he blooded several newcomers. "We fought well against well-organised opponents," said the former Italy boss. "But when the match goes to penalties you need luck on your side and it wasn't with us tonight."
