A goal in each half from Miral Samardžić and Moises helped HNK Rijeka win the Croatian Super Cup for the first time, defeating league champions GNK Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 at the Kantrida Stadium in Rijeka.
Rijeka, Super Cup runners-up in 2005 and 2006, took the lead 11 minutes in through Samardžić although Dinamo – league champions in 2013/14 for the ninth season in succession but beaten 3-0 on aggregate by Rijeka in the cup final – responded through new signing Leonardo Sigali shortly before the break. Brazilian Moises found himself with time and space in the Dinamo penalty area to restore the Rijeka advantage with 20 minutes to go, though, and the five-time Super Cup winners were unable to muster a second equaliser.
"I want to congratulate my players on their excellent performance; we had great fans and the atmosphere behind us and I am happy we managed to win another trophy – this one is for prestige," said Rijeka coach Matjaž Kek. His side face Ferencvárosi TC in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round on Thursday; Dinamo are also in European action next week, welcoming VMFD Žalgiris in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
