FC Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano has ended speculation surrounding his immediate future by agreeing terms on a two-year contract extension that ties him to the Catalan giants until June 2018.
The Argentina international – who turned 30 on Sunday – has made 111 Liga appearances for Barça since signing for the Spanish Liga side from Liverpool FC for a reported €22m in 2010. Mascherano's new deal with the Blaugrana includes a buy-out clause of €100m and an option to add a further season, which, if activated, would keep the San Lorenzo-native at the Camp Nou until summer 2019.
Assuming a central defensive role shortly after moving to Barcelona, the former CA River Plate, SC Corinthians Paulista and West Ham United FC player has enjoyed considerable success in Spain, winning two Liga titles, the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League, the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, Copa del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups.
Luis Enrique's side will begin their 2014/15 UEFA Champions League challenge from the group stage.
