Gâlcă returning to Steaua as coach

Constantin Gâlcă has been named as the new coach of Romanian champions FC Steaua Bucureşti, replacing Laurențiu Reghecampf at the club he served for five years as a midfielder.

Following Reghecampf's move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal SC, Gâlcă, 42, has taken charge on a two-year contract, having coached UD Almería's B team and Romania's Under-17s since hanging up his boots in 2006.

"I would like to coach the way I have learned to in Spain," said the 68-cap international, who represented RCD Mallorca, RCD Espanyol, Villarreal CF, Real Zaragoza and Almería during a decade-long stint in Spain after leaving Steaua in 1996. "I have always been a fan of FC Barcelona and their style of play.

"Our targets are clear and obvious: to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage and to win another title," added Gâlcă, who won four Liga 1 titles, two Romanian Cups and two Romanian Super Cups during his time at Steaua, who he joined from FC Argeș in 1991.

"It is a new challenge for me to train the club where I had so many successes as a player, and what I can promise to our fans is that we will have hard work and discipline in the dressing room."

Gâlcă represented Romania at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups as well as EURO '96 and UEFA EURO 2000. He has chosen Romania's U15 coach Dumitru Uzunea as his assistant.
