Former Portugal midfielder Paulo Sousa has been unveiled as the new FC Basel 1893 coach, accepting the post left vacant by Murat Yakin earlier this month.
The 43-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year deal with the Swiss title winners, less than four weeks after landing the Israeli championship in his sole season in charge of Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC. "Maccabi Tel-Aviv, the owner and management would like to thank Paulo and the rest of his staff for their significant contribution to a great season. Paulo helped the club's development with methods of hard work and professionalism," read a club statement.
Sousa, who won the UEFA Champions League as a player with Juventus and Borussia Dortmund in 1996 and 1997 respectively, started his coaching career in November 2008 at Queens Park Rangers FC. Following stints with Swansea City AFC and Leicester City FC, he spent two seasons with Videoton FC in Hungary, where he lifted the Hungarian League Cup.
