KR beat Fram to season-opening trophy

KR Reykjavík claimed victory in Iceland's Champion of Champions match on Sunday with a 2-0 defeat of Fram Reykjavík on Laugardalur's artificial surface.

In the traditional curtain-raiser to the Icelandic season, league champions KR confirmed their form ahead of next week's kick-off as Kjartan Henry Finnbogason gave them the lead with a 31st-minute penalty. Icelandic Cup holders Fram's hopes were definitively dashed by Emil Atlason nine minutes from time.

"We played well and got a good grip on the game and it is always great to win a trophy," new KR captain Baldur Sigurdsson said. "I am very much looking forward to the season. I think five teams will challenge for the championship. Beside us in KR in think it is FH, Breidablik, Valur and Stjarnan but still some of the other teams could easily be able to join them. We have a bigger squad than last season and even better since last season we were troubled with injuries."

Fram were coached by Bjarni Gudjónsson, who captained KR to the title last year, while moving the other way was Almar Ormarsson, a key player for the cup winners in 2013. Gudjónsson said: "I am pleased with our game even though I do not want to get used to losing. Our plan was to sit back, try to keep a clean sheet and then score a key goal but it was difficult against Iceland's best team."
