Juve leave it late, Fiorentina prevail

Juventus pulled 17 points clear at the Serie A summit thanks to Andrea Pirlo's 89th-minute winner at Genoa CFC, on a day when ACF Fiorentina put three past lowly AC Chievo Verona to return into fourth place.

Antonio Conte's charges did not have it all their own way at Genoa and could have been looking at a second defeat of the season when the hosts were awarded a penalty 18 minutes from time. However, Emanuele Calaio spurned the chance, leaving Pirlo to steal the headlines with a late free-kick.

Despite three defeats in their last four league outings, Fiorentina got off to the perfect start against Chievo as Juan Cuadrado and Alessandro Matri gave them a 2-0 half-time lead. Alberto Paloschi pulled one back for the visitors and, despite David Pizarro missing from the spot, Mario Gomez ensured an eighth home win.

Also on Sunday, Parma FC helped themselves to a 4-2 success at AC Milan, the Rossoneri losing goalkeeper Christian Abbiati to a red card after just five minutes for bringing down Ezequiel Schelotto. Former Rossoneri forward Antonio Cassano buried the resultant spot kick and put his team 2-0 up on 51 minutes, with Amauri and Jonathan Biabiany restoring Parma's lead after Adil Rami and Mario Balotelli had levelled for the hosts, the latter via a penalty.

In seventh, SS Lazio triumphed 2-0 at Cagliari Calcio, who had Daniele Conti sent off, while Atalanta BC swept aside UC Sampdoria 3-0. At the bottom, AS Livorno Calcio leapfrogged Bologna FC to escape the relegation zone with a 2-1 win against their rivals, despite finishing with nine men, and US Sassuolo Calcio climbed off the bottom by beating new basement side Calcio Catania 3-1.
