Lionel Messi became FC Barcelona's all-time leading scorer as FC Barcelona responded to last week's surprise loss at Real Valladolid CF by overwhelming CA Osasuna 7-0 at the Camp Nou.
Osasuna held Barcelona to a 0-0 draw earlier this season and their defence started well, but Messi's 18th-minute goal opened the floodgates. Alexis Sánchez made it 2-0 soon after, turning in Jordi Alba's cross following a one-two with Andrés Iniesta, before Iniesta himself added the third with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area.
Already comfortably the club's record scorer in competitive matches, Messi set a new benchmark in the 63rd minute, working space to register goal number 370 for Barcelona and overtake Paulino Alcántara as the club's finest marksman – friendlies included.
Substitute Cristian Tello's top-corner strike, moments after his introduction, made it five for the hosts and Messi tapped in two minutes from time to complete his hat-trick. The Argentinian international then squared for Pedro Rodríguez to knock in and complete the rout, which left Barcelona four points behind Liga leaders Real Madrid CF.
Elsewhere, fifth-placed Real Sociedad de Fútbol edged Valencia CF 1-0, Sevilla FC downed Valladolid 4-1 and the game between Elche CF and Real Betis Balompié ended goalless.
