FC Bayern München look all but guaranteed the title thanks to their 20-point lead, but Jürgen Klopp's men lead the race for runners-up spot after lifting themselves four points ahead of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who drew at Hannover 96 yesterday.
Missing injured duo Robert Lewandowski and Marco Reus, BVB nonetheless struggled in the first half at Freiburg, and were threatened more than once by the pace of Austrian forward Philipp Zulechner.
The visitors improved after the break and their captain notched the winner against his former club on 58 minutes, curling in with his left boot from the edge of the area. Jonas Hofmann missed a great opening to put the game to bed, but one goal was enough to leave the hosts one place of the bottom.
1. FSV Mainz 05 and Hertha BSC Berlin played out a 1-1 draw in Sunday's late game. Eric Choupo-Moting's penalty cancelled out Adrián Ramos's 51st-minute opener for Hertha to keep the hosts seventh.
