FC Aktobe have lifted the Kazakh Super Cup for the third time in their history after defeating FC Shakhter Karagandy 1-0 in Astana.
In a game of few chances, reigning league champions Aktobe enjoyed the upper hand throughout. Striker Alexander Geynrikh hit the post shortly before the break and then fed former FC Alania Vladikavkaz forward Danilo Neco to calmly convert the only goal of the game on 68 minutes.
Missing several key midfielders through injury, including Lithuanian international Gediminas Vičius, Kazakh Cup holders Shakhter struggled to respond. Indeed, they had to thank goalkeeper Aleksandr Mokin for keeping the scoreline tight as Aktobe claimed their first piece of silverware this season.
"We're happy with the win and that the match was played in such a festive atmosphere, with fans actively supporting both sides," Aktobe coach Vladimir Nikitenko told UEFA.com. "We will not be celebrating much, though, because the league starts next week and we face a tough trip to Taraz."
"You never get tired of winning trophies," added Aktobe midfielder Timur Kapadze. "It's great that we finished last season with a league triumph and have kicked off the new one with this Super Cup win. We were the worthy winners today. Shakhter were strong too, but we had more chances and were more efficient in the final third. I am also happy for Neco, who made such a great debut."
