VfL Wolfsburg missed the chance to go fourth in the Bundesliga as they succumbed to a punishing 6-2 loss at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
Victorious in their last three league outings, Wolfsburg could not keep pace with a rampant Hoffenheim side, who went ahead four minutes in through Roberto Firmino. Bas Dost squared the scores, but Niklas Süle struck for the hosts and Anthony Modeste hit two in the space of four minutes before the interval as tenth-placed Hoffenheim accelerated away.
Although Ivan Perišić pulled one back, Wolfsburg's Christian Träsch gave away a penalty and was dismissed with nine minutes left, allowing Sejad Salihović to register from the spot before Sven Schipplock rounded off the scoring.
Also on Sunday, Eintracht Frankfurt battled back to down VfB Stuttgart 2-1 and lift themselves up to 12th. Trailing Martin Harnik's first-half opener, Eintracht levelled through Jan Rosenthal with ten minutes to go and grabbed the points courtesy of Alexander Meier's 89th-minute winner.
