City sink battling Sunderland to lift League Cup

A pair of second-half goals a minute apart helped Manchester City FC come from behind to lift the English League Cup in a 3-1 win against Sunderland AFC at Wembley.

Sunderland fans were dreaming of a first major trophy since 1973 when Fabio Borini put them ahead after ten minutes. However, City, who last got their hands on the trophy in 1976, were back on level terms in the 55th minute courtesy of Yaya Touré's effort from range. Samir Nasri smashed in moments later and Jesús Navas sealed the result late on.

When Vito Mannone was forced to turn wide a wicked Sergio Agüero drive in the early stages, it appeared Sunderland – sitting in the Premier League relegation places – would be in for a long afternoon. Nevertheless, they soon shocked City as Borini latched onto a ball over the top before finishing expertly with the outside of his boot.

Only an outstanding Vincent Kompany tackle prevented the Italian forward netting his second as City struggled to handle Gus Poyet's side, but the Citizens came out with renewed vigour after the interval. Mannone could do nothing as Touré curled into the top corner from 25 metres and Nasri completed the rapid turnaround by thumping in from the edge of the area.

Sunderland did their best to snatch an equaliser, but Navas got a third on the break in the dying moments to secure Manuel Pellegrini a first major honour as City manager.
