Juventus stretched their Serie A lead to eight points by starting 2014 with a 3-0 defeat of second-placed AS Roma, who ended the game in Turin with nine men.
On the first day of matches this year, Juve were looking to extend their perfect home record this season against their nearest rivals and Arturo Vidal put them ahead 17 minutes in after tremendous work by Carlos Tévez. Early in the second half Leonardo Bonucci applied the finishing touch at the far post to Andrea Pirlo's free-kick, making it 2-0.
Roma hopes began to be extinguished when Daniele De Rossi was dismissed in the 75th minute for a foul on Giorgio Chiellini. Leandro Castan followed him seconds later after handling on the line to concede a penalty, converted by Mirko Vučinić.
ACF Fiorentina moved level on points with third-placed SSC Napoli as Gonzalo Rodríguez's goal saw off lowly AS Livorno Calcio 1-0 in Florence. AC Chievo Verona and Cagliari Calcio drew 0-0 in today's other game; the rest of the programme is played on Monday.
