Arsenal FC got the better of north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur FC in the standout FA Cup third round tie on what was a day of mixed fortunes for top-flight teams.
A sweetly-struck shot from Santi Cazorla was added to after the break by Tomáš Rosický, who dispossessed Danny Rose and raced from the halfway line to clip the ball over Hugo Lloris, as the Gunners made it two wins out of two this season against their neighbours.
The most high-profile casualties were Aston Villa FC, beaten 2-1 at home by third division strugglers Sheffield United FC, while Manchester City FC let a lead slip and had Dedryck Boyata sent off in a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers FC.
There was no such trouble for Everton FC, however, with Nikica Jelavić scoring his first goals since March and hitting the bar from the penalty spot as the Toffees defeated Queens Park Rangers FC 4-0.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær, meanwhile, sampled victory in his first game as Cardiff City FC manager. The former Manchester United FC forward, appointed on Thursday, oversaw a 2-1 comeback win at Newcastle United FC. In the other all-Premier League games, Crystal Palace FC triumphed 2-0 against West Bromwich Albion FC and Norwich City FC drew 1-1 with Fulham FC.
Holders Wigan Athletic FC surrendered a two-goal advantage against Milton Keynes Dons FC, who left Lancashire celebrating a 3-3 draw. Elsewhere, Championship clubs Barnsley FC, Doncaster Rovers FC, Leeds United AFC and Millwall FC lost to lower-league opposition and fifth-tier Macclesfield Town FC held Sheffield Wednesday FC.
