Italian football mourns record-breaker Amadei

Italian football is in mourning after former AS Roma and Italy forward Amedeo Amadei, Serie A's youngest ever player and scorer, passed away on Sunday at the age of 92.

Nicknamed Il Fornaretto (the Little Baker) as his family owned a bakery in Frascati, Amedei made his Serie A debut with the Giallorossi on 2 May 1937 when he was aged just 15 years and nine months – and he scored his first goal one week later. He notched 115 goals with the capital club, helping them to a first Scudetto in 1942, before joining FC Internazionale Milano and ending his career at SSC Napoli with a total of 174 Serie A goals to his name.

Capped 13 times by Italy, Amadei scored seven goals in the Azzurri shirt. After hanging up his boots, he coached Napoli and the Italian women's team between 1972 and 1978. "We would like to offer our heartfelt support to the family of Amedeo Amadei after the loss of the great centre-forward from the 1942 Scudetto-winning Giallorossi side," read a Roma statement. "A Roma icon, he was a true symbol of the team that was recognised and loved by generations of fans."
