VfB Stuttgart and 1. FSV Mainz 05 both moved on to 16 points in the Bundesliga by recording wins against struggling sides on Sunday.
In the early kick-off, it appeared Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp would deny Mainz after making a string of saves, but Eric Choupo-Moting headed in Zdeněk Pospěch's deep cross with two minutes remaining. Earlier in the game, Alexander Meier had struck a post for Eintracht, but that was as good as it got for Armin Veh's team, who remain 15th.
SC Freiburg are a place and two points further back after another home failure. Vedad Ibišević and Timo Werner scored a minute apart in the first half to put Stuttgart in a dominant position, but home hopes were boosted in the 78th minute when Mike Hanke pulled one back. However, 17-year-old forward Werner restored the advantage to seal a 3-1 win and ensure that Freiburg remain winless on home soil.
