Substitute Mario Götze scored on his return to former club Borussia Dortmund, as FC Bayern München won 'Der Klassiker' 3-0 at BVB Stadion.
It was the fifth time the two rivals had faced off in 2013, with Bayern triumphing in the most illustrious meeting of recent years – the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley in May.
Injuries plagued both teams, and the match was a tight affair until the 56th-minute introduction of Götze. After ten minutes, he broke the deadlock with a smart finish inside the far left corner. Manuel Neuer produced a magnificent bottom-corner save from Marco Reus as Dortmund hunted an equaliser, but on 85 minutes BVB were caught upfield.
An incisive counterattack ended with Arjen Robben punishing Dortmund with an perfect chip – the Dutchman's fifth against Dortmund this calendar year – and Thomas Müller swept in two minutes later to salt the hosts' wounds.
Four points behind leaders Bayern are Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who won 1-0 at Hertha BSC Berlin and leapfrogged Dortmund thanks to Stefan Kiessling's 28th-minute effort. Fourth spot, meanwhile, is occupied by VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, who prevailed 2-0 at VfB Stuttgart on Friday evening.
The pick of the games elsewhere on Saturday came at Eintracht Frankfurt, who drew 3-3 with FC Schalke 04. The hosts looked set to pick up all three points, but Benedikt Höwedes earned Schalke a share of the spoils with four minutes remaining.
