Dortmund take derby spoils as front three all win

Borussia Dortmund took the honours in the Ruhr derby, prevailing 3-1 at local rivals FC Schalke 04, while FC Bayern München overcame Hertha BSC Berlin in a five-goal thriller.

The Schwarz-Gelben were seeking revenge for the two defeats they suffered at the hands of the Royal Blues last term, and they got it with a win in Schalke's back yard. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tucked in Marco Reus squared pass on 14 minutes, and BVB had a half-time lead after Kevin-Prince Boateng failed to convert from the penalty spot.

Nuri Şahin doubled the advantage with a fine long-range effort and although Schalke's shining prospect Max Meyer scored in his third game running to unsettle the visitors, Jakub Błaszczykowski secured the victory.

Meanwhile, Bayern had to recover from Adrián Ramos's fourth-minute goal to beat Hertha. Mario Mandžukić goals either side of the interval were supplemented by Mario Götze (54) and that proved sufficient for the reigning champions - though Anis Ben-Hatira's quick response made for a nervy finish.

Ex-Bayern starlet Emre Can hit the winner seven minutes from time as Bayer 04 Leverkusen came from behind to beat FC Augsburg, while a Roberto Firmino double helped TSG 1899 Hoffenheim dispatch a Hannover 96 team that finished with nine men.

Shinji Okazaki scored both goals in 1. FSV Mainz 05's 2-0 defeat of TSV Eintracht Braunschweig, while VfL Wolfsburg moved fifth with a 3-0 success against SV Werder Bremen.
