Paris Saint-Germain FC usurped AS Monaco FC at the top of the Ligue 1 table after securing a straightforward win against Toulouse FC, while Olympique de Marseille also recorded victory to remain a point off the pace.
With Claudio Ranieri's Monaco not in action until Sunday, the champions took their opportunity to go top by a point with defender Marquinhos and Edinson Cavani securing a 2-0 success in the Parc des Princes. The breakthrough came in the 41st minute when Marco Verratti knocked a free-kick into Marquinhos's path and the Brazilian slotted in at the second attempt. Cavani secured the points in the 79th minute, converting from the spot after Uroš Spajić brought down the forward.
OM made it four unbeaten in the league with a 2-0 success at FC Lorient as Mathieu Valbuena's sublime 58th-minute free-kick curled inside the post to set them on their way. André Ayew scampered free on the left in the final minute before placing a low shot below Fabien Audard to seal the win.
AS Saint-Étienne failed to move into fourth spot after a pair of late goals from SC Bastia pegged them back. François Modesto's 95th-minute effort sealed a 2-2 draw, meaning Les Verts failed to jump above LOSC Lille who played out a goalless draw at Olymique Lyonnais. OGC Nice remain undefeated at home this season after earning a 1-0 win against EA Guingamp to take themselves fifth while FC Sochaux-Montbéliard lifted themselves off the foot of the table, defeating Valenciennes FC 2-0 to jump above their defeated opponents.
