Chelsea take advantage of Liverpool loss

Chelsea FC are the new Premier League leaders after beating Fulham FC 2-0 to exploit Liverpool FC's 1-0 loss to Southampton FC.

Southampton had won five of their last seven games against the Reds and Dejan Lovren's terrific header inflected a first defeat of the season on Brendan Rodgers' side. That allowed Chelsea to go top on goal difference, Oscar and John Obi Mikel claiming second-half goals - a first strike in 185 matches for the latter - to put their loss against FC Basel 1893 at Stamford Bridge behind them.

Liverpool's neighbours Everton won by the odd goal in a five at West Ham. Leighton Baines scored two stunning free-kicks to twice pull the Toffees level, before substitute Romelu Lukaku conjured the winner on his Everton debut. Mark Noble was dimissed for the hosts.

Hull City AFC came away from Newcastle United FC with a 3-2 win, while West Bromwich Albion FC debutant Stephane Sessegnon scored the first in a 3-0 defeat of his former club. An early penalty save by goalkeeper Brad Guzan helped Aston Villa FC win 1-0 at Norwich City FC; Libor Kozak became the third player of the day to score on his debut.
