AS Roma captain Francesco Totti said he is "extremely happy" to have confirmed his one-club status after renewing his contract with the Giallorossi until June 2016.

Totti, who will turn 37 next week and whose previous deal was due to expire in 2014, made his Roma debut on 28 March 1993 under coach Vujadin Boškov against Brescia Calcio, the first of 538 Serie A matches in the Roma shirt. The forward has registered 228 top-flight goals in the process, with only Silvio Piola (274) above him on the all-time scoring chart.

"I'm sure this Roma side will be very competitive," Totti added during a press conference in Rome. "We have started the season well, our team is balanced and we have a very good coach [Rudi Garcia] who wants us to play good football.

"Honestly I don't think too much about [Piola's] record. My objective is to do well and win trophies with Roma. I know it's almost impossible to reach Piola. Should I reach him, I would be happy, but I have different objectives for the rest of my career."

A FIFA World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, Totti has scored nine goals in 58 internationals. At club level he helped Roma lift the Scudetto in 2001 and the Coppa Italia twice. After winning their first three Serie A games of the campaign, Roma face city rivals SS Lazio on Sunday.
