Galatasaray AŞ became the first club to retain the Turkish Super Cup after Didier Drogba headed an extra-time winner to defeat Fenerbahçe SK 1-0.
It was an even first half, with Drogba and opposite number Moussa Sow both going close to opening the scoring. However, things swung the way of the league champions when Fenerbahçe defender Bruno Alves was dismissed in the 63rd minute.
However, Mert Günok excelled in the Fenerbahçe SK goal, making a number of outstanding saves to take the game into extra time. However, he was finally beaten in the 99th minute as Drogba guided his header into the net. The ten men fought back, Dirk Kuyt's volley brilliantly saved by Fernando Muslera before Sow was denied by the crossbar. Galatasaray, however, held on to lift the trophy once more.
"After our title success last season, this is the icing on the cake," said victorious captain Selçuk İnan. "It has given us a big confidence boost ahead of the new season. We hope to be the champions this year as well in order to have a chance to claim the Super Cup again next season."
