FC Steaua București have won the Romanian Super Cup for the sixth time in their history, beating FC Petrolul Ploiești 3-0 in Bucharest.
The Romanian champions, who last won the Super Cup in 2006, took the lead on 21 minutes when Cristian Tănase's cross was converted by Stefan Nikolić from close range. They were quickly presented with a chance to cement their lead, Petrolul's Ruben Enza-Yamissi receiving a second yellow card for a foul in the area. The resulting penalty kick was taken by Steaua captain Alexandru Bourceanu, who was denied by Peçanha in the Petrolul goal.
However, Steaua made their numerical advantage count. Łukasz Szukała increased the lead with a header just after the half-hour before Mihai Doru Pintilii made it three with a spectacular goal in the 42nd minute. There were no surprises in the second half as Steaua saw out the game to get their season off to the perfect start. The capital club start their UEFA Champions League campaign in the second qualifying round against FK Vardar on 16 July.
