Real Sociedad de Fútbol overcame RC Deportivo La Coruña 1-0 to send their opponents down and seal a place in next season's UEFA Champions League play-offs at the expense of Valencia CF.
Philippe Montanier's team began the day a point behind fourth-placed Valencia and secured the win they required to overhaul their UEFA Champions League chasing rivals courtesy of Antoine Griezmann's 22nd-minute effort. Los Che, meanwhile, were stung by four goals from Sevilla FC striker Álvaro Negredo in a chastening 4-3 reverse.
Defeat for Deportivo meant they lost their top-flight status alongside Real Zaragoza, who succumbed 3-1 at home to Club Atlético de Madrid. RC Celta de Vigo survived the drop thanks to a slender 1-0 success against RCD Espanyol that condemned RCD Mallorca to relegation despite their 4-2 victory over Real Valladolid CF.
Elsewhere, José Mourinho signed off as Real Madrid CF coach in swashbuckling style. CA Osasuna fought back from two goals down in the capital before Karim Benzema and José Callejón hit back to ensure Madrid's undefeated home streak lasted the season. It was not such a memorable send-off for Málaga CF boss Manuel Pellegrini, though, as his side went down 4-1 at FC Barcelona.
As for Levante UD, they drew 1-1 with Real Betis Balompié, while Granada CF consigned Getafe CF to a 2-0 defeat. The match between Rayo Vallecano de Madrid and Athletic Club ended in a 2-2 stalemate.
