Pasching deny Austria Wien double

Third-division outfit FC Pasching claimed a shock 1-0 victory against Bundesliga champions FK Austria Wien in the Austrian Cup final.

Daniel Sobkova scored the winning goal in front of 16,500 spectators at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna just after half-time to deny the capital club a domestic double. Ivan Kovacec powered through on the left-hand side before providing a perfectly measured cross for Sobkova to head in through the legs of goalkeeper Heinz Lindner.

The game got off to a fast start despite heavy downpours and chilly temperatures. Alexander Gorgon's free-kick in the fourth minute forced Pasching keeper Hans-Peter Berger to push the ball onto the woodwork then, from the resulting corner, Alexander Grünwald fired his volley just over. The underdogs did not buckle, though, with Sobkova going close before Lindner had to keep out a Kovacec effort from close range.

Gorgon's long-range effort struck the outside of the post just before the interval and Pasching made the most of their good fortune when Sobkova struck two minutes after half-time. Austria Wien looked shell-shocked but recovered to pepper Berger's goal in the final 30 minutes. The custodian denied Tomas Šimkovic and Tomáš Jun with reflex saves before Philipp Hosiner blazed over the best chance to equalise with seven minutes to play, though Austria Wien coach Peter Stöger noted: "We didn't deserve to finish a sensational season with the double after that performance. We were really sloppy in the first half. Congratulations to Pasching."

Pasching coach Gerald Baumgartner said: "We played courageously against a superior opponent. Pasching have less quality than Austria Wien but our plan was to even out the quality with a great deal of heart and passion. Obviously we had a bit of luck and a brilliant goalkeeper. Sometimes you need things to go your way." Sobkova added: "It's unbelievable for the club. I am stunned. It's a special feeling to score the winner in a cup final. It's the best moment of my career."
