Olympique Lyonnais held their nerve to secure third spot in Ligue 1 and a UEFA Champions League berth next term after seeing off Stade Rennais FC 2-0 on the final day of the season.
Requiring a win to be sure of third place, Lyon went ahead after 23 minutes as Lisandro scored from the spot following Onyekachi Apam's handball in the area. Rémi Garde's side then made certain of the result when Clément Grenier struck a superb free-kick with 21 minutes remaining.
That kept Lyon out of the clutches of their rivals, with OGC Nice jumping up to fourth and claiming a UEFA Europa League berth thanks to a 2-0 success at AC Ajaccio that included an 18th goal this season for Dario Cvitanich. Nice leapt ahead of AS Saint-Étienne and LOSC Lille, who drew 1-1, a result that means LOSC will be without European football next term. Les Verts can look forward to the UEFA Europa League after winning the French League Cup last month.
In the lower reaches, ES Troyes AC were relegated following a 2-1 reverse at Valenciennes FC, AS Nancy-Lorraine and Stade Brestois 29 having already been consigned to Ligue 2. In danger of dropping down a division, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard thus survived despite a goalless stalemate at SC Bastia. Also relieved were Évian Thonon Gaillard FC, who finished 16th after losing 2-1 at FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the dress rehearsal for Friday's Coupe de France showpiece.
